BSA A10 Super Rocket 650 cc Anaheim
September 2024
In the 60's & 70's Californian petrolheads were world leaders in oval circuit racing either on rough tracks but also on tarmac!...Only second in favour to Iconic Triumph Twins – like our own Triumph Rennsport - were the glorious BSA A10's of the late fifties (as well later A65's also currently in our workshops...).
So, it is rumoured that to combat such overwhelming competition, BSA West Coast bosses tried to prompt the factory to build a short run of upgraded Super Rockets, which they aptly aimed "Anaheim". The requirement for this confidential short batch of hybrid motorcycles was that it'd be halfway between circuit racers and standard OEM models of the period.... but... it never happened!...
So, surprise, surprise, we took on the mantle of building what might have been!!!
Although this bike originally left the factory in 1961, destined for the UK market, extensive research from the BSA Owners Club has revealed that it is fitted with a 650cc A10 Super Rocket motor from a machine originally imported by the legendary American racer and BSA importer, Hap Alzina of Oakland, California on 28th February 1958.
Before becoming the principal importer of BSA’s into the U.S., Hap Alzina was a prominent figure in the world of American motorcycle racing, particularly in the 1930s and 1940s.
His involvement with BSA in the early days helped shape both his career and the development of the racing scene during that era. Known for his skill on the track and his deep technical knowledge, Alzina played a significant role in not only popularising BSA motorcycles in the competitive racing world, but also became influential in future BSA design back in the U.K. factory.
This unique and previously hidden provenance inspired us to deliver on such design improvements that would have made Mr Alzina proud. This iconic machine was given a new lease of life and handcrafted from scratch by JETS' Tech Tony Taysom under Jeff Duval's overseeing stewardship, JETS' forever-uncompromising "Godfather"...
For starters, the OEM frame was restored to concours standards to include minor but many small touches to accommodate those numerous invisible improvements for that unique allure and upgraded specs.
On the mech side of things, the Very Fast Road RGS "+" Specs motor 650 cc motor was recommissioned and entirely rebuilt from scratch by World Class BSA Specialist Geoff Dewhurst head of SRM Classic Bikes who also fitted and tuned the incredibly efficient after market BSA A Series electric starters manufactured by lone super craftsman Steve McFarlane Engineering.
Many high-tech new or custom machined parts were made and used by Tony Taysom; emphasising optimisation and track usability instead of all-out uncontrollable power! Finally, Sean Reynolds, JETS' Chief Tech had the pleasure (and much aggro...) of completing the final PDI, which, as most readers will now, it never a simple task on a recommissioned Classic.
More similar recommissions in the pipeline...
