AJS 18C
March 2025
The AJS 18C, specifically the 1953 model was part of the AJS 18 series produced by A. J. Stevens & Co. Ltd. (AJS), a prominent British motorcycle manufacturer in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Here is the detailed backstory for this model:
From 1953 featured a single-cylinder, overhead-valve, 497cc engine, known for its reliability and decent power output for the era. It was designed primarily for off-road use, specifically in trials and scrambles, reflecting its "C" designation for competition.
This model, like others in the AJS range, emphasised a balance between performance and rugged durability, with a focus on lightweight construction, robust suspension, and off-road handling.
The 18C used a lightweight frame with a swing-arm rear suspension, a relatively advanced feature for 1953. This provided improved traction and stability on rough terrain, making it a popular choice among competitive riders.
The engine provided ample torque, crucial for trial riding, where low-speed manoeuvrability and precise control were essential. It had a four-speed transmission, ideal for varied terrain, from steep hills to muddy trails.
The AJS 18C built a reputation in the 1950s for excelling in competitive trials events, gaining admiration for its durability and handling.
The bike is currently having the Jets treatment in our workshop, and our intention is to subtly revitalise it, but certainly not detract from its unique heritage.
